Search engine optimisation.

What is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of making a website the one Google shows when someone searches for what that business does. It covers what the pages say, how they are built, how fast they load, and what other websites and Google listings say about the business.

What it means for a small service business

For a small service business, SEO is not a monthly report from an agency. It is whether a buyer in your town who types "emergency plumber Chorley" sees you or a rival. Most of it is done once and properly: pages that answer real questions, prices published, the technical basics right, a claimed Google Business Profile. The rest is keeping it current.

Does your business need to do anything about SEO?

Yes, but not the version you have been sold. If your website was built more than five years ago, the basics are almost certainly missing, and fixing them beats any amount of "ongoing SEO" on a broken page.
