Questions people ask

Whose test is this?

Google's. The same PageSpeed test Google uses to judge websites, run on a simulated phone connection, with the numbers explained. The four scores are Google's own, out of 100.

Why did I get a different number to last time?

Because the speed score is a lab measurement that moves run to run, often by ten or twenty points on the same unchanged website. Treat it as a band: over 90 is fast, 50 to 90 is middling, under 50 is slow. Accessibility, best practice and search basics do not move; they are checks, not measurements.

Why does speed matter for a small business?

Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on a poor signal, checking you out after a recommendation. If the page has not appeared in a couple of seconds, a share of them go back and tap the next name. Google also uses speed as one signal when it decides which of two similar businesses to show first.

What usually makes a small-business website slow?

Photos uploaded straight from a phone at full size, a page builder or theme loading everything whether the page uses it or not, chat widgets and tracking scripts, and cheap shared hosting that answers slowly. The list under the scores names the specific causes on your page.

What does "real visitors" mean?

Google also keeps a record of how its Chrome users actually experienced a website over the last month. Most small business websites have too few visitors for that record to exist, which the test says plainly rather than guessing.
