What is AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google now shows at the top of many search results, above the normal links. They answer the question directly and name the websites the answer was drawn from, which means fewer clicks for everyone below them.
What it means for a small service business
For an informational search ("how often should a boiler be serviced") the overview may answer without anyone visiting a website. For a local buying search ("boiler service Leyland") Google still mostly shows the map pack and normal results, but overviews are creeping in. Being one of the cited sources is the new top spot.
Does your business need to do anything about AI Overviews?
You cannot opt in, only qualify. Pages that answer the question plainly, with the business named in the answer and structured data behind it, are what get drawn on.
