The money words
Handover
What you get if you leave.
What is Handover?
Handover is what a client receives when they stop working with a web company: the website files, the domain, the accounts and the data, in a form the next people can use. A fair handover is defined before anyone leaves, in the agreement, not negotiated afterwards.
What it means for a small service business
The horror stories are all here: the domain the agency will not release, the website that only runs on their platform, the "we own the design". Sydex writes the exit into the agreement: your domain was always yours, the website code is handed over within a week, your data is exported on request, no exit fee.
Does your business need to do anything about Handover?
Read the exit terms before you sign anything, with anyone. If there are none, that is the answer.
