What is Backlinks?
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google treats each as a vote of confidence, weighted by how trusted the linking website is. They remain one of the strongest ranking signals, and they are also the most abused, which is why buying them is a fast route to a penalty.
What it means for a small service business
For a local business the useful backlinks are few and real: the trade body you belong to, the local paper, suppliers who list their installers, a sponsored junior football team. Agencies selling "link building" by the hundred are selling the thing Google punishes.
