What is Cookie consent?
Cookie consent is the requirement under UK law (PECR, alongside UK GDPR) that a website asks a visitor before storing anything on their device that is not strictly necessary, which includes analytics cookies such as Google Analytics. The visitor must be able to refuse as easily as accept.
What it means for a small service business
Most small-business websites run Google Analytics from the moment the page loads, which sets a cookie without asking. That is a breach, if a common one. The fix is a one-line bar that holds analytics back until the visitor says yes, and it roughly halves the visitor count, because that is the honest number.
